Families of children with special needs, who are considering homeschooling, often give the same reasons as any other families who school their children at home. They believe that their children will enjoy a better and more appropriate education at home than in public or private schools.
Some families have struggled for a long time to integrate their children into a school with a find a curriculum that is suitable for the needs of their child. What is that? Is a really fun stimulating and educational game. There are several ways to set up play . First try taking noodles, warm or cold, hard or soft, and place them into the Tub. Then burry an object in there and have them try to guess what it is. For a higher learning more task specific exercise, you can place 3-dimensional letters or numbers in there. This works especially well when trying to teach them how to spell their name, as the physical stimulation and the excitement of a new game will help them to retain what they learn. Try finding objects through the leaves of lettuce in water or pine cones or sand, making it like a treasure hunt! The possibilities are endless!
Color Magic! This is an exceptionally fun game! This Sand and Water Table project works best in with a clear tub. It will take you about one day in preparation, but it is worth the wait to see how this innovative color experiment shows in a literal way how colors when mixed create other colors. First Take 9 Plastic cups and fill them all with water. In each cup mix in paint. Mix three cups with Yellow paint, three cups with Red paint , and three cups with Blue paint. Place all 9 cups of the primary colors into the freezer for the following day. When the class or individual child you are caring for arrives, have a color chart on display and briefly explain to them about primary and secondary colors. Even if these terms are hard for them to grasp, your brief talk will lay the foundation for the Sand and Water Table Color Magic Experiment where the real learning will take place. Fill the tub with about one inch of hot water. Then place two different primary colors in the tub. As the ice melts watch the secondary color immerge. Throughout the project ask questions and keep them evolved. Repeat the process for all secondary colors. After each color is formed, give them a piece of paper to dip into the water. Save these colored papers for a future color project to strengthen their understanding of color theory.
Great Outdoors! Try taking the Sand and Water Table outside for another unique experience. Have your children with special needs look around and find different objects in nature. Then place them into the water in your Sand and Water Table. They will learn about the world around them as they watch acorns float and rock sink and ant that seem to walk on the top. This is a time to let them play and get interested in things on their own, to let them feel in control of their little world. When the time is up, they may even want to keep the acorn or rock etc. And if they are not in danger of swallowing or hurting someone else with their object, letting them keep it is good. It will reinforce the memory of their experience.

Thank you for visiting our Special Needs for Children… website. This site is dedicated to raising funds to better the lives of children with developmental disabilities.
The Special Needs Foundation (SNF) was formed 4 years ago as a part of the Utah Amateur Sports Foundation (UASF). The primary goal of USAF is to provide funding for teams of players with certain cognizant disabilities. So far, the efforts have focused on players involved in the sport of ice hockey but will expand to include baseball and basketball as funds increase. USAF will also shortly kick off an effort to work with Iraqi and Afghan veterans who have been wounded in those conflicts to provide equipment for their special requirements to also participate in the sport.
The Special Needs Foundation was started in the fall of 2006 with funding for two Special Needs for Children ice hockey teams comprised of players aged 5-50, male and female. The only requirements were and are that a player be generally ambulatory and able to take rudimentary instruction from a coach on the ice. All equipment, fees, ice rental costs, game expenses and referees were and are donated or purchased through the Foundation.
The goal was then and continues to be to provide all Special Needs kids and adults who want to participate with the financial support to do so without cost. In its first year of operations, Special Needs Foundation provided over $50,000 in gear, ice rental, uniforms and referee support for about 50 players. The group seeks and receives support from the local hockey community in the form of donations, used equipment, volunteer time donations and the like. Several local charities, particularly the D. Forrest and Gerda Green Foundation, Regulators Hockey and US Bank have provided significant financial support as well.
The Special Needs Foundation has provided team participation opportunities for over 100 players in the Salt Lake and Provo areas and has seen its model transplanted into teams in California, Colorado and Texas.
The players practice once a week, generally on Saturdays, and work hard to improve. When the players leave the ice after a practice session they are covered in sweat. The impact on their lives is without question, significant. The physical athletic endeavor, the color and feel of the uniforms and equipment and the sense of inclusion are extremely important in improving the quality of life experienced by these oft overlooked members of society. They are the focal point of this effort and they recognize that they really are special. Their abilities of speech, movement, communication and interaction with the “normal” players and adults are dramatically enhanced.
The local Utah High School hockey teams provide “game” situations for the players with the high school team and the special needs team splitting and playing with each other. This allows “normal” players to interact with the special needs kids. A deeper appreciation of the disabled and what they can do if given the chance is felt by all participants and there is no question the program touches the lives of all who participate – “normal” and “Special”. As one young lady with Down syndrome who had spent her whole life watching her brothers from the stands was heard to say to the Dad, “Now my brothers come to watch me!”

We here at the Special Needs Foundation look forward every year to our Special Needs for Children Events. We hold as many as we can to raise funds for our special needs children. The next event is a Motorcycle ride through Salt Lake and the surrounding counties. We invite you and everybody you know to participate. Everyone is meeting at the “E” Center in West Valley City, Utah. Make sure to check out the Grizzbees Ride website and register for the event.
